New Delhi: The attributes for May 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests are given to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his party usually flaunt the success of the test as one of the major achievement of the then government.
But in a major revelation, former President APJ Abdul Kalam, the hero of Pokhran tests in 1998, has said that just two days before the announcement of 1996 Lok Sabha poll results, the then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao had asked him to make preparations for nuclear tests which could not take place as the election results were not in favour of Rao-led Congress government.
Dr Kalam made this revelation while delivering the 7th RN Kao Memorial Lecture organized here by the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Recalling the old days Dr Kalam said it was the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao who had asked him to make preparations for nuclear tests, just two days before the results of the 1996 general elections were to be announced.

Dr Kalam was scientific advisor of then defence minister.

But the elections went against Rao and the Prime Minister called Kalam and asked him to brief Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Prime Minister-designate so that a "smooth takeover" of such a very important programme can take place.

"This incident reveals the maturity and professional excellence of a patriotic statesman who believed that the nation is bigger than the political significance," Kalam said.
