Ahemadabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had registered his protest over increased excise duty on non-branded gold jewellery and TDS imposed on gold purchase worth over Rs 2 lakh in the union Budget. Modi also shot off a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appealing him to withdraw new taxes on gold.

In his letter Modi demanded that excise duty which has been increased on non -branded jewellery should be withdrawn along with the TDS imposed on purchasing of gold worth over Rs 2 lakh.

While making an appeal to the centre to relax taxes Modi said that jewellers of the state are against the new taxes imposed in the budget and are on strike for the past 10 days.

As a result the jewellery industry which generates large employment opportunities in the state is facing a loss of Rs 16, 000 crore. In the wake of ongoing strike four lakh skilled workers have lost their jobs, wrote Modi.
