New Delhi: What will happen on December 21, 2012? Is it really the date which is going to mark the end of the world? The date is nothing but a joke for some while a panic for many.

Amid high speculations that the world will meet its final fate on December 21 this year, a NASA research has finally put an end to the countless theories on predictions of Mayan Calendar.

After a thorough study and analysis of the predictions of Mayan Calendar on possibility of the Earth ending on December 21, 2012, the NASA scientists have concluded that 21st December 2012 will be nothing more than a normal December solstice.

“There is simply no scientific evidence to support any claims of an apocalypse on Earth in December 2012,” the research said.

The scientists also dismissed the theories about planetary alignments leading to an apocalypse on Earth on December 21, 2012. The research said that no planetary alignments have been forecasted in the next few decades. But even if such an event occurs, it will have a negligible effect on the Earth.

Mayan Civilization

The Mayan calendar is a system of calendars used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and in many modern communities in highland Guatemala, Mexico and some others.

The Mayan civilization is dated back from 300 BC to 500 BC.

The calendar moves in cycles with the last cycle ending in December 2012. Hence, it is often interpreted that the world will end on 21 December 2012, at 11:11 UTC.

End of Earth?

Countless theories suggesting the end of the Earth have surfaced time and again. But the reality that the Earth has a bigger life span persisted.

Before December 21, ‘May 21, 2011’ was predicted as the last day of the earth.

The Mayan Calendar of Guatemala has a totally different story to tell. According to an unknown edition of the calendar, there is no threat to the planet and the human civilization for the next several decades.
