Amritsar: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) would probe charges relating to the embezzlement of government funds meant for the development of Punjab's border areas, Vice Chairman, Raj Kumar Verka, on Saturday said.

Directions have been issued to Deputy Commissioners Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Inspector General Border Range to submit proceeding reports within a week's period on complaints in the matter.

Public funds were allegedly misappropriated by the former personal assistant of Gulzar Singh Ranike, a state minister who resigned on September 16 citing "moral grounds" in the wake of the controversy.

"It is highly unfortunate that Sarbdayal, Personal Assistant of former Punjab Cabinet Minister Ranike, grossly misused the public funds while depositing the money in dummy bank accounts and later got it cashed for personal reasons," Verka claimed.

More than 100 complaints had been received by the Commission from Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts as real beneficiaries were allegedly denied help and the same amount was embezzled, he said.
