New Delhi: Former Supreme Court Judge Justice A K Ganguly, who was part of the bench which monitored the CBI probe into the 2G spectrum allocation scam, on Friday said the National Green Tribunal would help in ensuring sustainable development in clean environment in the country.

Praising the efforts of the apex court in checking environmental degradation, he said, "Development is a process of expanding real freedom for which the principle of sustainable development has to be followed."

"I am absolutely sure that the National Green Tribunal would go a long way in maintaining the environment and ensure a sustainable development," he said, addressing a conference on international environment law.

He said steps taken by the Supreme Court have given new meaning and dimension to the principle of sustainable development.

Dwelling on the issue, Justice Ganguly said, "In the two decades from the Stockholm Declaration of 1972 (which mooted the concept of sustainable development) to 1992 Earth Summit at Rio, the sustainable development has come to be accepted as a viable concept."
