New Delhi: In its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the Central government has clearly stated that after the latest notification, the production, sales and storage of tobacco related products like gutka has been prohibited.

The Health Ministry will soon write to state governments requesting them to put a ban on gutka in effective manner.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Rules-2011 by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the tobacco and nicotine shall not be used as ingredients in any food product.

The FSSAI also agrees that the complete ban on gutka has already been implemented as per the rules. Asim Chaudhry, Director (Administration) said, “There is no doubt that as per the latest notification, the sale of gutka has been banned across the country. If anyone has doubt, he can challenge it in the court.”
