Addressing a gathering of NCP’s women’s wing in Nagpur, Mirje reportedly said that women need to be ‘careful’ and questioned the late night outing of Delhi gang-rape victim.

“Why did Nirbhaya go for a late night show with her boyfriend?” she asked.

Mirje, who was inducted into the Maharashtra Women's Commission recently, highlighted that clothing and behaviour of women also play a major in inviting rapes.

The female politician also commented on the photojournalist, who was gang-raped at the abandoned Shakti Mills complex in Mumbai last year.

Mirje was quick to rectify her errors as she later apologized for her comments by calling them her ‘personal opinion’.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress condemned Mirje’s remark, and said the comment is ‘totally unacceptable’.
