Ranchi: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday announced support to Congress candidate Sunil Kumar Sahay, brother of Union Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay, for the June 12 Hatia assembly bypoll.

"We consulted with our party in-charge for Jharkhand affairs Tariq Anwar after getting a request from the Union Tourism Minister and Congress’ Rajya Sabha member Pradeep Kumar Balmachu, and got the nod to support Congress candidate," NCP's Jharkhand unit president K M Gupta told reporters here in presence of Sahay and Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Assembly Rajendra Prasad Singh.

Sunil Kumar Sahay, who is brother of the Union Tourism Minister, is contesting from Hatia, which fell vacant after the death of Congress MLA Gopal Sharan Nath Shahdeo in 2010.

"A political polarisation has started after Congress’s Pradeep Kumar Balmachu won the Rajya Sabha elections (on May 3), and we want to take forward the effect to fight against the 'wrong policies" of Jharkhand government," Subodh Kant Sahay told reporters here.

Congress’ pre-poll ally Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) has nominated Ajay Nath Shahdeo, the deputy mayor of Ranchi for the Hatia bypoll.

Ruling BJP and Ajsu party have separately fielded Ramjilal Sharda and Navin Jaiswal respectively for the bypoll.
