Vadodara: Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar were among other NCP leaders who arrived in the city here on Tuesday night to participate in the fifth national convention of the party being held in the city on Wednesday ahead of the Gujarat assembly polls.

Other NCP heavyweights like Praful Patel, Tariq Anwar, Chhagan Bhujbal and D P Tripathy have also reached the city, Jayant Patel, president of NCP's Gujarat unit, said.

"The party is organising this meet with an aim to increase its strength in Gujarat. It has a strength of three members in the 182-member assembly," he said.

Patel hoped that the national convention would help the NCP emerge as a major force thereby raising its current tally of three seats in the Gujarat assembly.

"We want to defeat the ruling BJP, as people are seeking change and we will play a role," he said.
