Amritsar: Introspecting on the reasons behind the party’s electoral defeat in Punjab, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday admitted that the party’s wrong approaches like delay in ticket distribution and growing influence of nepotism in the state party unit were the factors which caused party’s poor show in both the assembly and local body polls.

Gandhi, who was in Amritsar to meet the party leaders for discussing the reasons behind the party’s defeat in Punjab and chalk out strategy for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, stressed on the need to reflect on the reasons behind party’s recent failures in the state.

"I was surprised over the Assembly election results in Punjab (in February 2011) as I had expected the Congress’ victory. So there is a need for introspection as to what went wrong," he said here.

Listening to the party leaders mainly the block presidents during the meeting, Rahul identified four main points which led to the party's debacle in the state.

From what the block Presidents said, Gandhi concluded that the first reason for the party's debacle in the state was that the tickets were distributed by senior party leaders without consulting the grassroots workers.

Second, he said, tickets were not distributed on time and there was late distribution of tickets. Third, he maintained that a proper representation of Dalits was not ensured in ticket distribution.
And fourth, he said, he had noticed the Block Presidents saying that too much nepotism was shown during the distribution of the party tickets and some families got the tickets to their kith and kin.

Listening to the cadre, Rahul said, he will submit his report to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and whatever necessary steps that are needed to be taken will be taken. Making a brief speech, the Congress General Secretary said, he had not come to deliver any lecture on any of the issues prevailing in the state party unit, but wanted only to discuss what was happening within the party.
When Rahul was addressing party workers, the media was not allowed to cover the event. Among others present on the occasion included the Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh, in-charge of party’s Punjab affairs Gulchain Singh Charak besides Jagmeet Singh Brar, Sunil Jakhar, Manish Tewari and Partap Bajwa.
