Bathinda: It’s difficult to assess whether unemployment or the attraction of police uniform drove these women to the test centers here, but it’s true that 40 newly-married and three pregnant women turned up on Wednesday to appear in the fitness test for recruitment as constables in Punjab Police.

Women, holding law and engineering degrees also lined for hours in the scorching heat to grab the employment opportunity.

The Punjab Police had received 1440 applications for the 47 seats of woman constables. While a certificate of class X was fixed as the minimum eligibility for the post, women holding professional degrees also applied for the post.

Some of the candidates hold degrees like LLB, B.Tech, BCA, B.Ed and BBA.

At least 19 candidates had masters’ degree and 15 others possessed B.Sc degree.
To top it all three women who were three-months pregnant also turned for the fitness test. But the authorities denied them permission to take the test.

Out of the total applicants, while 192 were found to be underage, while 10 were overage.
