New Delhi: Taking self cognisance of the recent custodial death in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday issued notice to the state administration seeking report on the alleged beating of two persons in police custody resulting in the death of one.

Issuing notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Sitapur district, the NHRC has asked them to submit the inquest report, magisterial inquiry report, post-mortem report along with the report of independent investigation within eight weeks.

The commission has also expressed dismay over the delay by the police in reporting the death in custody within 24 hours as per the NHRC guidelines.

Sartaj and Jabbar were allegedly beaten in police custody, leading to the death of Jabbar on March 13. They were arrested by the Tambaur police under Sitapur district in connection with a murder case.
