New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday sought report from Human Resource Development ministry over suicide of 18 Dalit students in some of the country's elite educational institutions and discrimination against them in Patna University.

The commission issued notice to the secretary in the ministry on the basis of media reports alleging caste-based discrimination and violence in Patna University hostel earlier this year.

The commission had also received a complaint from NGO Navsarjan Trust of Ahmedabad, quoting media reports that 18 Dalit students committed suicide in last four years.

"The secretary has been given four weeks time to respond," said an official of NHRC.
