New Delhi: Nine Indian boxers entered the quarterfinals of the 2011 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Incheon, South Korea.

It was, however, a mixed day for India on day three of the competition. While Asian Championship debutants Santosh Harijan (52kg) and Mandeep Jangra (69kg) secured easy victories, 2010 Youth Olympics silver medallist Shiva Thapa (56kg), who was also making his first appearance at the biennial championship, retired owing to shoulder pain.

In the welter weight category, Mandeep, 18, dominated against Komiljon Kholioov of Tajikistan before winning 21:9 for a quarterfinal berth.

In the fly weight division, Santosh defeated Tugstsogt Nyambayar of Mongolia, 18:9 to enter the quarterfinals.

However, there was disappointment for India in the bantam weight category as 17-year-old Shiva had to withdraw in his opening bout.

With Asian Games silver medallist Dinesh Kumar (81kg) getting a bye in the first round and 34th National Games gold medallist Arun Hooda (+91kg) starting in the round of eight, nine Indian boxers have made it to the quarter-final stage.
