New Delhi: BJP chief Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday called on President Pranab Mukherjee and congratulated him on assuming the top post.

Terming his visit as a "courtesy" call, he said, "It had nothing to do with politics."

"After Pranab Mukherjee became President, I had to congratulate him. I congratulated him and held some discussions. I have old personal relations with him. It was a courtesy visit. It had nothing to do with politics," he told reporters after coming out of Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Gadkari evaded questions on Ram Jethmalani's letter to him asking him to project Narendra Modi as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

"I do not know about it... We will meet later," he told reporters.
