"The Supreme Court has rejected the state government's plea demanding capital punishment in the case. But advocate Gopal Subramaniam, who is representing the government, said the court should consider the punishment to be somewhere between 30 years or life imprisonment. To which the court has agreed for the hearing," Neelam Katara, the mother of deceased, told the reporters.

Earlier, the Apex Court had rejected Neelam's plea for conferring the death sentence on his murderers, Vikas and his cousin Vishal, holding that Katara's murder wasn't an honour killing. The Supreme Court has already upheld the conviction of Vikas and Vishal for the murder of Nitish Katara.

However, it is yet to conclude arguments on the quantum of sentence. The Delhi High Court had awarded 30 years imprisonment to Vikas and Vishal.
