New Delhi: In the wake of horrible incidents of gang rape in recent times, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati has announced that she will not celebrate her 57th birthday on January 15 the way she has been celebrating for several years.

Mayawati’s communication sent to all district BSP offices in the state, she has asked the party workers to offer blankets and necessary items to the poor and to ensure that it is a low key affair.

“We have also got specific directions not to play songs and display money or muscle power, which was an essential feature of her previous birthday celebrations," a BSP leader said on the terms of anonymity.

The party workers have also been directed to refrain from collecting donations on this occasion.

According to sources, the party has hired folk singers and is preparing for audio CDs through which the good works of the Mayawati’s regime and the failure of the UPA and the Samajwadi party government would be highlighted. The theme song of the day will be ‘Behenji Sansad Ki Sherni’ (behenji, the lioness of Parliament). It will be played at all district headquarters on January 15.

The BSP chief has convened a meeting of the party's divisional and zonal coordinators on January 7 to ensure that her birthday is celebrated with simplicity.

Mayawati’s birthday celebrations in the past have been extravagant often courting controversy over the expenses incurred, active participation of bureaucrats and observance of the day as ‘Arthik Sahyog Diwas”.
