New Delhi: Nokia India on Friday said it has appointed P Balaji as the Vice President and Managing Director for its India operations.

In this role, Balaji will be responsible for Nokia's mobile phones and smart devices business in India, while providing strategic direction and operational focus, Nokia said in a statement.

Besides building and consolidating Nokia's market presence, Balaji will focus on energising the brand, driving partnerships and strategic alliances and developing the capabilities of the organisation in India, it added.

"Balaji brings in exceptional understanding of the telecom industry having worked in diverse functions across the sector. His experience and leadership make him a strong addition to the India leadership team," Nokia Senior Vice President (IMEA) D Shivakumar said.

In his previous role as Managing Director of Sony Mobile Communications India, Balaji was responsible for growth strategy, establishing strong operator and distribution partnerships and driving sales for the company.

In the last 22 years, Balaji has held leadership roles across diverse functions like sales, marketing, product management and communications and corporate affairs in Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, AT&T and Tata group.

Announcing restructuring of its global sales network, Nokia in october 2011 had said its India head D Shivakumar has been promoted to head business in around 90 countries across the Middle-east, the African region and India.
