New Delhi: In what could give a jolt to Bacchus lovers, the excise department of Delhi government has decided to take a strong action against those who are found drinking alcohol inside their vehicles at public places and they could be levied a fine of Rs 5000.

In a drive to discourage, the excise department has seized 200 cars for tippling liquour at public places and carrying alcohols more than legally permitted amount.

A senior official of state’s excise department said, “In the last few months, we have registered as many as 375 cases and have seized 200 vehicles as well as 402 were arrested.” 81, 789 foreign brand and 48, 261 India-made liquor bottles have been also confiscated, sources said.

“Owing to space crunch, the Delhi Police is struggling to keep the cars with them, so it was decided to auction them,” an excise department official said.

In the wake of high tax rate, going to hotels and restaurants for consuming liquor in the national capital is a costly affair, so people prefer to tipple inside their vehicles.
