New Delhi: The National School of Drama (NSD) has itself recommended the government to de-notify its status of deemed university for failing to fulfill the standards set by the University Grant Commission (UGC).

The government has accepted the NSD request and has permitted the institute to shed off the deemed status. Now, an effort is being made to make NSD a Centre for National Importance.

NSD was given the status of a deemed university in March 2005 by the UGC along with those institutions which did not meet the stipulated conditions.

But after the investigation, the Human Resource Development Ministry found 44 such universities which did not show any sign of improvement.
