First Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid was involved in a controversy with the Election Commission over the issue of sub quota for the Muslims, now Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma has taken the EC head-on. This indicates that the Congress has become obsessed with the issue of minority reservation and can go to any extent to grab power in Uttar Pradesh. In spite of repeated warnings by the Election Commission, senior leaders and Union Ministers have time and again raised this issue thus violating the model code of conduct. And though the Congress high command has urged its party leaders to respect constitutional bodies, such confrontations only prove that it’s being done according to a planned strategy.  Moreover, these leaders are being extended support from within the party itself. It is a pity that in spite of the Congress condemning the statement of Beni Prasad Verma many top leader of the party have come out in his support.

The Congress in its manifesto in 2009 had certainly spoken of providing reservation to the Backward Muslims on the lines of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, but why has it woken up so late? Why is it in such haste to announce reservation for the Muslims at the time of polls? If reservation was such a major issue, why was only 4.5 percent reservation announced for the minorities two months back? Is it because the remaining 4.5 percent of reservation was to be made during the polls? If the Congress is so serious towards the development of minorities especially the Muslims, why didn’t it make the announcement of 9 percent reservation for minorities in 2011? All this was done only to deceive the Muslims and grab their votes. The Congress has adopted caste politics so well that the regional parties are finding it hard to polarize caste based votes. The Election Commission after getting over with the Salman Khurshid chapter is now busy investigating another Congress Minister Beni Prasad Verma for violating the model code of conduct. The Election Commission rather than approaching other institutions for help must stand up and take action against such instances on its own.
