Cuttack: The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Odisha’s Mahidharpada area and Khurda district has risen to 30. The victims, mostly poor people from Cuttack and Khordha districts, fell ill on Tuesday after allegedly consuming illicit liquor. 

“One more person died Wednesday night. The death toll increased to 30," Cuttack District Collector SN Girish said.

He said about 50 people, including three women, were undergoing treatment at Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack.

Girish said among the dead was Baidhar Bhoi, the brew seller.

The state government has provided an immediate financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to the aggrieved families and ordered a judicial probe into the incident.

People of Mahidharpada fell ill after drinking illicit liquor that was laced with a deadly mixture of cough syrup procured from a pharmacy company located in Rasulgarh area of Bhubaneswar.

Meanwhile the pharmaceutical company's unit was raided and sealed last night and further investigation was ordered.

According to the police 10 people have been arrested including three relatives of the kingpin and seven officials of the pharmaceutical company.
