The BJP won three out of six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) winning the rest three. The ruling Congress-National Conference coalition in the state was routed as they failed to win even a single seat.

It is important to note that BJP could not win a single in Jammu and Kashmir in the 2009 and 2004 general elections and Omar believes the boycott call by the Hurriyat is the reason behind their resurgence in the state.

Quoting an article, which analyzed BJP’s good showing in the valley, Omar  said on Twitter : “The Hurriyat & the consequence of its boycott. How BJP became the No 1 party in J& K and what this means”.

It is believed in the political circles of the Jammu and Kashmir politics that the fear of militants and boycott call by the Hurriyat are the major reasons behind a low percentage of polling in the valley, indirectly benefitting the saffron party, which was already riding high on the Modi wave in the nation and the polarization of voters on communal lines.
