New Delhi: The sudden surge in the onion prices has hit the political corridors in Delhi. BJP, which had lost the election 14 years ago on this issue, lashed out at Sheila Dikshit government for not being able to contain the skyrocketing onion prices.

BJP general secretary Vijay Goel on Friday sold onions at much cheaper rates in front of Lal Quila to protest the exorbitant onion prices. Goel blamed CM for not taking quick decision to check the rising onion prices.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra has held the government and brokers responsible for the unaffordable onion prices. Malhotra said that the same Congress leaders wearing the garland made from onions had taken to the street to protest the rising onion prices in 1998 but they are now silent over the issue.

The BJP leader further said that the Sheila Dikshit cannot ward off her responsibility by putting the blame on the Centre. Malhotra also demanded to stop the export to onions with immediate effect.

It is to be noted that the involvement of middlemen is the reason behind higher prices of onion. The officials from Delhi Agriculture Marketing Board said that the prices will moderate only when the new produce comes. Onion prices are witnessing constant rise and fall in the last few days. The wholesale prices of onion were ranging between Rs 10-25 per kg on Friday. Onion is presently sold at the retail price of Rs 30-40 per kg. Prices of green vegetables are also on the rise.
