Kolkata: Argentine midfielder Jonas Gutierrez on Thursday said their journey to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup will begin on Friday when they take on Venezuela in a FIFA international friendly at Yuba Bharati Krirangan. (Agencies)
The midfielder though said the team, which is worshipped in the streets of football-crazy city, will have to stay focussed.
"It's an all new experience which we had witnessed as soon as we landed at the Kolkata airport. People were cheering us from the very instance, which was simply amazing," said the Newcastle United footballer.
"However, our focus is now on the game. It's all about starting from the scratch and get the team back to proper shape. The journey which begins tomorrow is important for us and our new manager (Alejandro Sabella)," Gutierrez insisted.
The 56-year-old, Sabella, was roped in to replace Sergio Batista whose contract was terminated following Argentina's debacle at home in Copa America 2011.
The Albicelestes lost to Uruguay to be eliminated from the quarterfinals.
Gutierrez also revealed that their 0-4 blanking at the hands of Germany in the World Cup was still difficult to overcome.
"We were improving game after game but World Cup is such a difficult tournament that just one hiccup could bring an end to your campaign. This is what the World Cup is all about. Still today we find it quite difficult to digest the defeat," he admitted.
Both New Castle United and Argentina may be in a team building mode but Gutierrez said playing for one's country was different from that of a club.
"Yes, it's a little similar but while playing for the club, you get more time to spend with the entire group as we play every week. But as far as playing for country is concerned you play hardly one or two matches in six months or so. This aspect of adjustment is pretty difficult," he said.
