Deoghar: Over 100 students of the Birla Institute of Technology (Mesra) here have been reported sick after having contaminated food and water.

While 102 girls and 3 boys have fallen sick, more than a dozen students were admitted to the Deoghar Sadar hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, medical teams are treating the students on the campus itself.

Students complained of abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

Civil surgeon RN Prasad who was treating the sick said, “After the treatment the students have shown signs of improvement,” adding “the symptoms of illness hinted at Enterocolitis (inflation of small and large intestine). It may have been caused due to contaminated water and food intake”.

The district administration has formed a three-member team to probe the matter. Deputy Commissioner of Deoghar, Ravi Kumar said, “The case will be investigated only after the report comes.”

The incident was reported on Monday at around 2pm after the deterioration in students’ health, following which the kin of the students also reached the college.
