Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav who took part in the Ambedkar Jayanti functions here this morning recalled his contributions to the society and announced a public holiday on his death anniversary on December 6.

BSP supremo Mayawati, who took part in a party function to mark the occasion perhaps had an inkling of how her core dalit voters could be lured, termed the love shown for Ambedkar by her opponents as "politically motivated".
The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party, which faced serious reverses in the last Lok Sabha elections, in its bid to keep her flock intact highlighted as to how other parties had ignored Ambedkar in the past.

"The love of Congress, BJP and SP for Baba Saheb is politically motivated," Mayawati alleged.
To drive home her point among her electorate she recalled that Congress got Ambedkar defeated in first Lok Sabha elections in 1952 using money power and also did not confer upon him the Bharat Ratna.

She further claimed that in 1989 the then VP Singh-government conferred the country's highest civilian order upon Ambedkar in return to BSP's support.
