The 10 percent water tariff hike will be effective from today for those enjoying free water. The hike has already been in effect since January for the rest of the consumers.

The water subsidy was the first decision of the AAP government. Soon after the announcement, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had tweeted, “It is duty of any responsible government to provide ‘lifeline water’ to its citizens. We may debate the quantum but can v argue angst the principle?”

The scheme was under doubt after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Delhi Chief Minister on February 14.

The budgetary support for the scheme ended on March 31 – the last day of the 2013-14 financial year.

Similarly, the 50 percent subsidy provided on power tariffs also ended and Delhiites will now have to pay full bills beginning April 1.

The AAP government had subsidized power by 50 percent for houses consuming up to 400 units per month.
