Srinagar: Opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said it will support the resolution seeking clemency for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

"We will support the resolution. We have been demanding clemency for Guru right from the time his death sentence was announced," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti told reporters after a legislature party meeting here.

Mehbooba stressed that if the Assembly passes the resolution, it should not become an issue.

"Heavens are not going to fall if the resolution is passed appealing the President (Pratibha Patil) for clemency for Guru," the PDP president said.

She said while the death sentence of Nalini, a convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was commuted to life imprisonment, a similar resolution has been passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking clemency for three other convicts in the case.

"Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was no less a symbol than parliament," she said.

The Assembly will debate on September 28 the resolution submitted by independent MLA from Langate Sheikh Abdul Rashid.
