New Delhi: On the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, the father of Ayurveda Dhanvantari and god of wealth Kuber are worshipped. The day is anticipated to be very favourable for good fortune. As per the ritual, it is said that the purchasing made on the day will multiply your wealth by 13 times. A lamp is also presented to the Lord Yama.

According to Pandit Prahlad Pandya, the celebration of Lord Dhanvantari just two days ahead of Diwali holds big significance. The lord is worshipped for health benefits.

As per the mythology, Dhanteras is celebrated on the birthday of Lord Dhanvantari. According to a myth, during churning of the ocean Lord Dhanvantari appeared with a pot of elixir in his hands. As he appeared with pot in hands, there is a trend of buying pots on Dhanteras.

Before the worship, earthen lamps are put at the entrance of home. Lord Kuber is worshipped and lamps are donated on the name of Lord Yama.

People also traditionally buy silver on the day. It is also said that the silver represents moon and has cooling effect on individuals. Silver also has the capabilities to make people more patient. Diwali will be celebrated on Tuesday.
