New Delhi: A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking refugee status to Bangladeshi migrants especially those belonging to the communities like Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and Buddhists who are residing in Assam.

Hearing the PIL, the Apex court sought more information from the petitioner in this regard.  The court also suggested the petitioner to move their petitions in the Guwahati High Court in this regard.

A Bench of Justices P Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi on July 27 last month had agreed to examine the plea for grant of citizenship or refugee status to thousands of displaced persons of these communities.  The petitions were filed by NGOs Swajan and Bimolangshu Roy Foundation.
