Jammu: Amid growing death toll during Amarnath Yatra, it has been found that carelessness of the pilgrims is also a reason for deaths. This has been said by the doctors appointed to take care of the devotees on their way to the holy shrine of Amarnath. Many of the devotees are walking on foot to the shrine while holding fast leading to decline in their blood sugar level. Significantly, 88 deaths have been reported so far.

Many of them are sick but they are continuing their journey while carrying a fake medical certificate. Many of the pilgrims are not taking enough precaution how to protect them in changed environment which is also a prime reason behind the deaths. Acting on the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir health department and the state’s Governor NN Vohra, the doctors have submitted reports citing the above mentioned reasons for deaths.

The report also says that elderly people above 70 years of age are also traveling without proper preparation like wearing woolen cloth and other wearing as pre the requirement of the local climate which is resulting into their deaths. It has been found that many of the pilgrims are travelling without eating for three days and are also having bath in cold water.

Some of the patients suffering from such diseases with which the journey is not allowed are carrying fake medical certificate claiming good health. Doctors have found that most of the deaths have been caused by the problems like pulmonary edema and hypothermia which has been caused to the pilgrims due to higher altitude and severe cold.
