Chapra: Senior JD-U leader and Bihar Education Minister PK Shahi on Monday filed his nomination papers for Maharajganj Lok Sabha by-poll.

Shahi submitted two sets of nomination papers to the electoral officer-cum-district election officer Abhijit Sinha.

He was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, senior BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy and state unit JD-U chief Vashistha Narayan Singh.

By-election for Maharajganj seat has been necessitated due to the death of sitting RJD MP Umashankar Singh in January this year. He defeated JD-U leader Prabhunath Singh during 2009 general elections. Later, Prabhunath Singh fell out with Nitish Kumar and quit the party to join Lalu Prasad's RJD.

Shahi, who had served as Advocate General of Bihar during NDA’s first innings (2005-10), is at present state's Education Minister. Voting would take place on June 2.
