New Delhi: After lying in abeyance for past few years, the High Security Number Plate (HSNP) project may soon see light of the day. Plans are afoot to introduce HSNP for vehicles plying on the national capital routes within the next five months.

Few years back, the Union Government had set the deadline for the installation of HSNP in vehicles. However, the callous approach of concerned authorities ensured that the deadline kept extending till the time the project was kept in the back seat.

However, in wake of the increasing number of vehicle theft and crime committed by stolen vehicles, the issue has once again come in the limelight.

Supreme Court has reprimanded Delhi government for its failure to implement the project. Therefore, the Transport department has reflected a sudden urge to get the tender process for the project completed at the earliest.

Companies have been asked to submit their tender bids for manufacturing HSNP by May 26. According to a senior official, the tender process and selection of company will be completed within two months. The official said: “Thereafter, the other formalities will be soon completed and we are optimistic of starting with the project in the next five months.”

In the initial phase, HSNP will be fitted only in new vehicles. After the formation of rules and regulations, all vehicles of Delhi will be covered under the project.
