He said blood donation was a great service to society and congratulated those who donate blood.

"On World Blood Donor Day I congratulate everyone who keeps donating blood. It is a great service to society,” Modi said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

"Today we reaffirm our pledge to raise greater awareness about the importance of blood donation. My young friends should take a lead in this," he added.

Meanwhile Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan inaugurated blood donation drive at RML hospital in Delhi. He also donated blood on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day to promote others for the same.

World Blood Donor Day was started in 2004 to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their voluntary life-saving gifts of blood.

World Blood Donor Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day, and World AIDS Day.
