Amritsar: With his government having faced a tough year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wants to usher in the New Year with his family and friends. Therefore, he arrived in the Sikh holy city on Saturday evening with his wife.

This is the first time after becoming Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh would celebrate the New Year with his family.

Accompanied by his wife Gursharan Kaur, the Prime Minister landed at the Guru Ram Das International Airport at Rajasansi near here amid tight security measures.

He will meet his brothers Surjeet Singh Kohli, Daljeet Singh and sisters Gyan Kaur, Narinder Kaur and Nirman Kaur on Sunday Morning.

Delighted family members said that they will pray for his better health and longer life on the first day of New Year.

His brothers Surjeet Singh Kohli said, “Because of security concerns he is not allowed to come home. Whenever he visits Amritsar, he invites us to Circuit house. When he came to Amritsar after coronary bypass surgery in 2009 elder sister-in-law Gursharan Kaur couldn’t stop herself and went to meet him at his residence amid security.”

The visit is being termed as a 'private one', a police officer said here.

“He will stay at the Circuit House overnight. Additional security personnel have been requisitioned from neighbouring districts to have foolproof security in place. SPG (Special Protection Group that protects the prime minister) officials are camping here already to ensure all security measures are in place,” the officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal said the Prime Minister would visit the Golden Temple complex on early Sunday. He will fly back to Delhi on Sunday afternoon.

Amritsar city has been shivering at sub-zero temperatures for the past one week with the minimum temperature on Friday morning being recorded at minus 2.1 degrees.

The Prime Minister lived and studied in this city after his family migrated here from Rawalpindi post partition.

A devout Sikh, the Prime Minister last visited the shrine in March 2009, just a few weeks after his coronary bypass surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.
