Ghani and Modi toured the Parliament building and arrived at the main session hall in the presence of the guests, including member of the Afghan parliament, as per sources.

While addressing the people on inauguration of Afghan Parliament PM Modi said, ''Afghanistan with abiding faith in tradition of Jirga has chosen democracy against challenges that would have defeated lesser people.''

He added, ''Great Afghan people waged epic struggle of courage and resolve to shape their future with vote and debate not gun and violence''.

PM Modi announced 500 scholarships for children of martyrs of Afghan security forces while scheme of 1,000 scholarships will continue.

''Despite those who did not want us to be here, we are here because of your faith in us, you never doubted strength of our friendship'', PM Modi said.
