The announcement was made at a press conference attended by NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Meenakshi Lekhi, the BJP MP who represents New Delhi constituency in Parliament. It is an iconic street on which the Prime Minister is living since he resumed the office.

Earlier, BJP parliamentarian Meenakshi Lekhi suggested to change the name as it doesn’t have desi vibes in it. Kejriwal on Wednesday announced that Race Course Road has been finally renamed after considering suggestion in a meeting with NDMC.

The BJP had suggested to rename Race Course Road as Ekatma Marg which was opposed by the AAP because the Delhi government demanded it to be rechristened after a martyr.

AAP MLA Surinder Singh, a former National Security Guard (NSG) commando who suffered injury in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, said several veterans approached him saying if the road is to be renamed then it should be done to honour martyred soldiers.

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi has proposed to NDMC to rename Race Course Road as Ekatma Marg based on the philosophy of her party's ideologue Deendayal Upadhyay.
She said that the existing name, Race Course Road, ‘does not match with Indian culture’.
