The CBI has rubbished the Liberhan Commission report which indicted 68 people including BJP stalwarts Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Adavani in the demolition of the Babri Masjid stating how a commission is formed in order to gain political mileage. The Liberhan Commission did not have any qualm in showing its keenness to care for the interests of a particular party. The Commission should be accountable for making pointless and unilateral conclusion, which took inordinate time to deliver its findings. The Commission had to submit its report in three months while it consumed as many as 17 years for reaching conclusion clearly showing slipshodness in the probe process. In a clear indication of wastage of the government exchequer, a whopping Rs 9 crore was splurged by the Commission during the investigation. Despite spending much time and money, the Liberhan Commission’s report was termed meritless by the CBI, which is quite shocking.

Recently, a meeting between the CBI and the Home Ministry officials was held in which the investigating agency said that prima facie there did not seem to be an iota of evidence to register a fresh case on the demolition issue. The Commission indicted 68 people including many big wigs making the credibility of the panel dented. The Liberhan Commission’s report hauled up even Atal Bihari Vajpayee, while it is well known that he was not involved in the Ayodhya movement. Although the Commission did not bother to grill him in the Babri Masjid demolition case during its investigation, but it charged him leaving the message that the Commission was formed in order to settle political scores, maligning the image of a particular party. It is worth mentioning, despite 17 years having elapsed, the Central government had declined to publish the Liberhan Commission report until it was flashed in media. And later the government had compulsion to table the report in Parliament. It is required that the Centre and state governments must learn that forming a directionless commission in order to probe the matter is the sheer wastage of time and money and it only plays with sentiments of the nation. There is a public perception that constituting commissions or committees is simply a bid to distract the attention of people. The government should take serious note of it and stop forming such meaningless commissions in future.
