Madhubani:  Police on Monday fired in the air in self-defence after being attacked by a group of students at a bus stand in Bihar's Madhubani district, a police office said.

The cops led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sanjay Bharti were attacked by a group of students while they were trying to prevent the irate students from taking law into their hands after a fellow student was thrashed by the driver and conductor of a bus, Station House Officer (SHO) Laxman Prasad said.

The students, however, refused to heed to the pleas of the policemen and pelted stones on them prompting the cops to fire in the air to disperse the students, he said.

The students earlier beat up the bus driver and conductor and damaged the vehicle to protest thrashing of a fellow student by the duo, Prasad said.

An investigation was going on in the matter, the SHO said.
