Chandigarh: In what could be a major fault in the policing system, the Punjab police have expressed their inability to produce undertrials in the court as they are busy in providing security to VIPs.

Explaining the reason for not producing the undertrials in the court, Amritsar Jail Superintendant told Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday, “The under trials have not been produced in the court as the policemen are entrusted with the task of providing security to the VIPs.”

The bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Mahesh Grover ordered Punjab Home Secretary to file an affidavit in this regard by January 9. The bench also asked the Home Secretary to furnish the details of under trials produced in the court during the last three months. Failing to do so, the Home Secretary would be required to appear before the court on January 10, the bench said.

In a Public Interest Litigation filed by one of the inmates of Amritsar jail, it was mentioned that the police have time and again failed to produce the under trials in the trial court. The inmate had also appealed to the high court for setting up of a special police cell to speed up the process of producing the under trials in the court.

In reply to the petition, the jail superintendant said, policemen find themselves unable to produce the under trials in the court due to their engagement in providing security to VIPs.
