The Uttarakhand Congress is still smarting from the defection of its senior leader Satpal Maharaj to the Bharatiya Janata Party. In such a crucial juncture, the problems got doubled mainly as even a senior leader like Vijay Bahuguna is not willing to contest the upcoming polls from an electorally crucial constituency like Tehri.

In order to convince Vijay Bahuguna, Uttarakhand Chief Minister and state Congress in-charge Yashpal Arya met the former Uttarakhand chief minister in the national capital on Friday. Bahuguna has however refused to contest polls and also made it clear that he won’t field his son in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Most of the senior leaders are not willing to contest the polls and the Congress is yet to nominate any of its candidates in the five Lok Sabha seats of the hill state. The anti-incumbency wave generated by the Central government is also responsible for the regional wing of the Congress laying down its arms instead of gearing up for the upcoming political battle.

Several Congress leaders – Harish Rawat, in-charge of party’s Uttarakhand affairs Ambika Soni and Ahmed Patel who attended the party’s meet in the national capital discussed the issue of nomination of candidates from the hill state.

Though all efforts were made to convince Bahuguna to contest polls, no significant success could be attained.

It seems that the Congress is yet to get over the hitches and glitches related to selection and announcement of candidates.

Besides, it’s also said that the differences in opinion and mistrust between Bahuguna camp and Rawat camp is getting wider with every passing day.

According to sources, Bahuguna is disappointed over the party’s strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the Congress leaders are making possible efforts to ‘pacify’ the senior Congress man.

It’s also being said that Bahuguna is upset over the internal political affairs in Uttarakhand and the Congress is making constant attempts to mollify him.
