Ahmedabad: With Gujarat Assembly polls round the corner, arch political rivals, BJP and Congress have geared up to strengthen their social image in order to lure votes in their favour.

While Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced his government’s plan to build a Statue of Unity, a 182-metre high statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in October 2010 and also fasted for 51 hours on the issue concerning the Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam.

On the other hand, Congress too launched ‘Sardar Patel Sandesh Yatra’ with the motive of exposing the state government. The ongoing march started on January 2 in six different places and will conclude on January 13.

In the poll meetings, the opposition parties are seen leveling allegations against each other.
Time and again, Narender Modi along with national BJP vice president Purshottam Rupala has accused Congress of being unjust to Patel. He says that Congress posed obstacles in Sardar Patel becoming the country’s first Prime Minister.

On the other hand, Gujarat Pradesh Congress President Arjun Modhwadi and former president Siddharth Patel accuse Advani and Modi of using Sardar Patel’s name for political gains.
