Madurai:
There are no flags, banners, hoardings or cut-outs in the ongoing assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, thanks to the Election Commission’s model code of conduct.

The candidates have opted for other measures like distributing money to woo the voters. Several people have been arrested in this regard.

According to Election Commission data, gifts or cash worth of Rs 40 crore has been seized so far. More than 57,000 cases of the violation of model code of conduct have been registered.

In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the court against Union Minister MK Alagiri, it was demanded that he should be prohibited from entering the south Tamil Nadu region, which is considered to be his stronghold.

Police have also confiscated Rs 6 crore from Trichy near Srirangam assembly constituency from where AIADMK chief Jayalalitha is contesting.

The gift items including mixer-grinder-juicers, coolers, color TVs, motorcycles and laptops have been distributing in the state to placate the voters.
