New Delhi: The prompt action by the railway officials averted a major tragedy on board Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani express, which might have proved to be a face-saver for Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, the initial investigation reports suggest that it was poor maintenance of the pantry car that turned the express train into a speeding inferno.

According to railway sources, the fire broke out due to short circuit in the pantry car of the train which has not been inspected since long.

Commissioner of Railway Safety has begun investigations and the report will be submitted in few days.

But according to the catering department, the fire broke out due to poor maintenance of the pantry.

The catering department is being transferred from IRCTC to railways. The transfer procedure is on for the last one year. Those in the know how suggest mandatory inspection of pantry cars have not been conducted due to the transfer procedure.

Primary investigations point out that the fire broke out due to short-circuit. And one of the major reasons for that is, rodents eating up the wires in the pantry car. The wires should be checked often to avoid such incidents.

Meanwhile, Railway spokesman said that an alarm system has been started on a pilot basis. But, he expressed inability to divulge details for the same.
