Kolkata: Following the elimination of Maoist top leader Kishenji, another member of the red terror group, Barun Das alias Suraj surrendered in the Superintendent of Police office here on Wednesday. Duryodhan, Lalita, Jagri Bashke, Rajaram Soren and Ravi Mandi have already laid arm before the state police.

In the present tenure of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seven Maoists have given up arms to leave a life of simplicity and honour.

SP N Perwez said, “Convinced by the CM’s rehabilitation package for Maoists, Suraj decided to surrender. Due to poverty, Suraj was compelled to join the Maoist group. Within 15 days, six Maoists in the district have surrendered.”

Two hardcore Maoists, Jagori Baskey and Rajaram Soren, one of whom was reportedly involved in the Silda camp killing in 2010, surrendered before Banerjee in her Writers Building office.

Rajaram Soren had said he was led into the Maoist-fold a decade ago, but he felt betrayed when the rebels started targeting the tribal who were the ‘so-called’ motivation behind the red terror outfit.

According to police officials it is a healthy sign that Maoists were returning to the mainstream. However, some opine that the scare of the security forces has compelled the Maoists to lay down their arms.
