Kolkata: Blaming the previous Left Front government in West Bengal for the battered financial condition of the state, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here on Saturday said debt-to-income ratio got unbalanced during their 34-year regime.

Mukherjee told reporters, “I had more frequently warned the Left Front government of increasing the sources of revenue. Neither former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu nor Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee paid any attention to this.”

“States like Gujarat and Karnataka managed to raise the tax collection to 8-9 percent but WB finished could manage a mere 4 percent. Since the Trinamool Congress-led Mamata Banerjee government resumed power, the state saddled with a hefty debt of Rs 2.03 lakh crore,” added Mukherjee. The state has the highest per capita debt in the country.

It is worth mentioning that Mamata has been directly held the previous Left Front government responsible for plight of the state. Mukherjee too echoed the same.

Citing the dismal financial condition of state, Mamata is demanding for special economic package from the Centre.

Despite Mukherjee being in charge of the Finance Ministry, WB is yet to get special package which has soured the Mukhrejee-Mamata relation.
