Kolkata: Admitting weak organisational structure in West Bengal, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee specified that this disadvantage made them unable to pressurise Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Bannerjee for more seats in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Congress is contesting the Assembly elections in coalition with Trinamool Congress.

At the suggestion of the Congress workers of the state, the party contested the Municipal elections on its own. This proved disastrous for it as the party could garner only 10 seats while Trinamool Congress registered win in most of the seats. Congress met a similar fate in other municipalities as well whereas Trinamool continued its winning spree.

This dismal performance highlighted the lack of organizational skills among the party workers in the state, said Mukherjee. “This left us with no choice but to yield to Trinamool’s pressure on seat-sharing issue for the Assembly elections.

He agreed there was an outrage among the leaders and district presidents of Congress due to the fewer seats allocated to the party owing to the Mamata-Congress coalition. But he added, “It is important to understand the real situation. We do not have a strong organization like that of Trinamool.”
