Patna: For an overall jump in the literacy rate, Bihar received an award from President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil at a function in New Delhi on Thursday on the occasion of International Literacy Day.

Human Resource Development (HRD) Department Principal Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh received the award on behalf of state government for securing 20 percent and 16 percent growth rate in the female literacy and overall literacy respectively.

As per the 2001 census, female literacy rate was 33.57 in state which increased to 53.33 percent in 2011. Similarly overall literacy rate increased from 47.53 percent in 2001 to 63.82 percent in 2011.

In addition, Bihar has performed well in bridging the gap between the male and female literacy rates.

40 lakh illiterate women were made literate under the ‘Mukhyamantri Akshar Anchal Yojana’ by two lakh teachers. Following which the target has been increased to 1 crore.
