Thiruvananthapuram: President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday flagged off the 'Vigyan Vikas Yatra' organized by P N Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra in Kerala with the mission of spreading education and reducing poverty.

Speaking at a simple function held at the Raj Bhavan, Mukherjee commended the grassroots level campaign which encouraged reading and love for books among the youth.

The programme had successfully instilled in the youth a thirst for learning and scientific temper.

Paying tributes to Panicker, who dedicated his life to initiate and guide the highly successful literacy movement in the state, he said the Centre's national literacy mission drew inspiration from the work and methods of Panicker.

From the Travancore Library Association that he founded in 1945 with 47 rural libraries, Panicker developed a series of similar units which has now grown into a network of 6,000 libraries and a tremendously successful movement for total literacy in Kerala, the President said.

The yatra will cover a distance of 2,000 km in 30 days and cover a population of about 30 lakh people.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Union Minister of state for Human Resources Development Shashi Tharoor and state Panchayat Minister MK Muneer were present.
